For the non-tech folk, a backend system is essentially a content management system for your iPhone or Android apps. It is hosted on a server (that we can setup) and allows you to control the app’s users, images, words, products, security or other features within your app from one central place.

Just because we like to be confusing in the tech world, this might be called a content management system, a web portal, an admin portal, etc etc.
